A resistance R and a capacitor C are connected in series to a source V=V0sinωt. Find: (a) the peak value of the voltage across (i) the resistance and (ii) the capacitor; (b) the phase difference between the applied voltage and the current — which of them is ahead?
Solution
The impedance is Z=R2+XC2 with XC=ωC1, so the peak current is
I0=ZV0=R2+XC2V0
(a)(i) Peak voltage across R:
VR0=I0R=R2+XC2V0R
(ii) Peak voltage across C:
VC0=I0XC=R2+XC2V0XC
(b) The phase angle satisfies tanϕ=RXC. In an RC circuit the current leads the applied voltage by this angle ϕ.
