Define the term 'wattless current'.

Answer: The component of alternating current that consumes no average power is called wattless current.

Solution

When the current in an a.c. circuit is out of phase with the voltage (a purely reactive circuit), the average power is zero. The current then flows without dissipating any power and is called the wattless (or idle) current.
