2-hexene Products

The two products formed in above reaction are -
  1. (A)Butanoic acid and acetic acid✓ Correct
  2. (B)Butanal and acetic acid
  3. (C)Butanal and acetaldehyde
  4. (D)Butanoic acid and acetaldehyde

Answer: (A)

Solution

-Hexene is . Ozonolysis followed by a work-up with water, which generates hydrogen peroxide, cleaves the double bond oxidatively, so each doubly bonded carbon that carries a hydrogen is converted to a carboxyl group. The end gives acetic acid and the end gives butanoic acid. The two products are butanoic acid and acetic acid.
