For compound having the formula , the correct option from the following is
- (A)Ga is more electronegative than Al and is present as a cationic part of the salt ✓ Correct
- (B)Oxidation state of Ga in the salt is +3 .
- (C)Cl forms bond with both Al and Ga in
- (D)Ga is coordinated with Cl in
Answer: (A)
Solution
The formula is the ionic salt : gallium is in the +1 state as the cation, while aluminium occupies the tetrahedral anion where the chlorines are bonded only to aluminium, not to gallium. Owing to the d-block contraction gallium is in fact slightly more electronegative than aluminium , yet it is gallium that forms the cationic part. Thus gallium is more electronegative than aluminium and is present as the cationic part of the salt.
