Given below are two statements :

Statement-I : Element ' X ' and ' are the most and least electronegative elements, respectively among and P . The nature of the oxides and is acidic and amphoteric, respectively.

Statement-II : is covalent in nature and gets hydrolysed in water. It produces and in aqueous medium.

In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below :
  1. (A)Both Statement-I and Statement-II are true.
  2. (B)Statement-I is true but Statement-II is false.✓ Correct
  3. (C)Both Statement-I and Statement-II are false.
  4. (D)Statement-I is false but Statement-II is true.

Answer: (B)

Solution

Across the nitrogen family the electronegativity falls on moving down the group, so among nitrogen is the most electronegative and antimony the least. The oxide is purely acidic while is amphoteric, which makes Statement-I correct. For Statement-II, is indeed covalent and is readily hydrolysed, but it gives boric acid and hydrogen chloride, , and not together with , so Statement-II is false. Statement-I is true but Statement-II is false.
