Method used for separation of mixture of products ( B and C ) obtained in the following reaction is:
  1. (A)Simple distillation
  2. (B)sublimation
  3. (C)steam distillation
  4. (D)fractional distillation✓ Correct

Answer: (D)

Solution

Benzene with bromine and the Lewis acid undergoes electrophilic substitution to bromobenzene (A). Bromine is ortho/para directing, so nitration of bromobenzene with concentrated and gives a mixture of 1-bromo-2-nitrobenzene and 1-bromo-4-nitrobenzene (B and C). These two positional isomers have boiling points that differ only slightly, so the mixture is resolved by fractional distillation.
