Let ABC be an isosceles triangle in which A is at (−1,0),∠A=32π,AB=AC and B is on the positive x -axis. If BC=43 and the line BC intersects the line y=x+3 at (α,β), then α2β4 is :
Answer: 36
Solution
△ABC is isosceles with AB=AC and ∠A=32π=120∘, so the base angles are ∠B=∠C=30∘.
By the sine rule, sinABC=sinCAB:
AB=BC⋅sin120∘sin30∘=43⋅3/21/2=43⋅31=4.
Since B lies on the positive x-axis at distance AB=4 from A(−1,0): B=(3,0).
The base angle at B is 30∘, measured from BA (which points in the negative x-direction from B); this places line BC at slope −31 through B:
y−0=−31(x−3)⟹x+3y=3.
Intersecting with y=x+3, i.e. x=y−3:
(y−3)+3y=3⟹y(1+3)=6⟹y=1+36.
So β=1+36 and α=β−3=1+36−3=1+36−3(1+3)=1+33(1−3)=−(1+3)26 (rationalising: 1+33(1−3)⋅1−31−3=1−33(1−3)2=−23(4−23)=−6+33, matching −(1+3)26 since (1+3)2=4+23).
This gives the clean relation α=−1+3β, i.e. β=−α(1+3), so β2=α2(1+3)2 and β4=α4(1+3)4.
α2β4=α2(1+3)4.
Since α=−(1+3)26, α2=(1+3)436, so
α2β4=(1+3)436⋅(1+3)4=36.
