Choose the correct statements about the hydrides of group 15 elements.
A. The stability of the hydrides decreases in the order
B. The reducing ability of the hydrides increases in the order
C. Among the hydrides, is strong reducing agent while is mild reducing agent.
D. The basicity of the hydrides increases in the order
Choose the most appropriate from the option given below:
  1. (A)B and C only
  2. (B)C and D only
  3. (C)A and B only✓ Correct
  4. (D)A and D only

Answer: (C)

Solution

Down group 15, the M–H bond weakens as the central atom grows larger, so thermal stability of the hydrides falls: — Statement A is correct. A weaker M–H bond releases hydrogen more readily, so reducing power rises down the group in the same order, — Statement B is correct. This makes the weakest reducing agent and the strongest, the reverse of Statement C, which is false. Basicity depends on how available the lone pair is for donation; down the group the lone pair sits in a larger, more diffuse orbital and is held less tightly to a smaller extent of s-character, so basicity actually decreases down the group, — Statement D, which claims the opposite order, is false. Statements A and B are correct.
