First ionisation enthalpy values of first four group 15 elements are given below. Choose the correct value for the element that is a main component of apatite family :
  1. (A)✓ Correct
  2. (B)
  3. (C)
  4. (D)

Answer: (A)

Solution

Apatite minerals, , are built around the phosphate ion, so phosphorus is the main group-15 component of the apatite family. Among the first four group 15 elements, first ionization enthalpy falls as N > P > As > Sb (1402, 1012, 947, 834 kJ/mol) due to increasing atomic size down the group. The value corresponding to phosphorus is 1012 kJ/mol.
