Given below are two statements :

Statement I: In group 13, the stability of +1 oxidation state increases down the group.
Statement II: The atomic size of gallium is greater than that of aluminium.
In the light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below:
  1. (A)Statement I is incorrect but Statement II is correct
  2. (B)Both Statement I and Statement II are correct
  3. (C)Both Statement I and Statement II are incorrect
  4. (D)Statement I is correct but Statement II is incorrect✓ Correct

Answer: (D)

Solution

Statement I is correct: down group 13 the inert-pair effect makes the oxidation state more stable relative to . Statement II is incorrect: because of the poor shielding by the intervening 3d electrons (d-block contraction), gallium is actually slightly smaller than aluminium, so aluminium's atomic size is greater than gallium's. Hence I correct, II incorrect.
