A ray OP of monochromatic light is incident on the face AB of prism ABCD near vertex B at an incident angle of 60∘ (see figure). If the refractive index of the material of the prism is 3, which of the following is (are) correct ?
(A)The ray gets totally internally reflected at face CD✓ Correct
(B)The ray comes out through face AD✓ Correct
(C)The angle between the incident ray and the emergent ray is 90°✓ Correct
(D)The angle between the incident ray and the emergent ray is 120°
Answer: (A), (B), (C)
Solution
At face AB, incident angle i=60°. By Snell's law: sin60°=3sinr, giving sinr=33/2=1/2, so r=30°. The ray refracts into the prism at 30° to the normal. Assuming ABCD is a square prism, the ray travels to face CD at 60° to its normal. Critical angle θc=sin−1(1/3)≈33.6°. Since 60° > θc, total internal reflection occurs at CD (A correct). The ray reflects and travels to face AD, where it refracts out (B correct). Detailed ray tracing shows the emergent ray makes 90° with the incident ray (C correct). Correct answers: (A), (B), and (C).
