A monochromatic beam of light is incident at 60° on one face of an equilateral prism of refractive index n and emerges from the opposite face making an angle θ(n) with the normal (see the figure). For n=3 the value of θ is 60∘ and dndθ=m. The value of m is
Answer: 2
Solution
Applying Snell's law at the first face:
sin60°=nsinr
At the second face:
sinθ=nsin(60°−r)
Differentiating the second equation with respect to n:
cosθdndθ=−ncos(60°−r)dndr+sin(60°−r)
From the first equation:
ncosrdndr+sinr=0⇒dndr=−ncosrsinr
Substituting and evaluating at n=3, r=30°, θ=60°:
dndθ=cos60°1(cos30°tan30°+sin30°)=2(21+21)=2
Therefore, m=2.
