Positive Tollen's test is observed for
  1. (A)(see structure)
    ✓ Correct
  2. (B)(see structure)
    ✓ Correct
  3. (C)(see structure)
    ✓ Correct
  4. (D)(see structure)

Answer: (A), (B), (C)

Solution

Tollen's test (silver mirror test) is positive for aldehydes and -hydroxy ketones. Option (A) is an -unsaturated aldehyde (acrolein), which gives a positive test. Option (B) is benzaldehyde, an aromatic aldehyde, which gives a positive test. Option (C) is benzoin, an -hydroxy ketone, which can rearrange via enediol to an aldehyde and thus gives a positive test. Option (D) is chalcone, an -unsaturated ketone with no -hydrogen on the carbonyl side, which does not give Tollen's test.
