The figure given below shows an LCR series circuit with two switches S1 and S2. When switch S1 is closed keeping S2 open, the phase difference (ϕ) between the current and source voltage is 30∘ and phase difference is 60∘ when S2 is closed keeping S1 open. The value of (3L1−L2) is ____ H.
(A)29
(B)92✓ Correct
(C)31
(D)3
Answer: (B)
Solution
With S1 closed and S2 open the inductor L2 is short-circuited, leaving C, R and L1 in series, for which tanϕ=RXL1−XC, so tan30∘=31=RXL1−XC. With S2 closed and S1 open, L1 is short-circuited and C, R, L2 remain, giving tan60∘=3=RXL2−XC. Dividing, XL2−XC=3(XL1−XC), hence 3XL1−XL2=2XC, i.e. 3ωL1−ωL2=ωC2 and 3L1−L2=ω2C2. With ω=300rad/s and C=100μF, 3L1−L2=(300)2×100×10−62=92H.
