Among the following substituted silanes the one which will give rise to cross linked silicone polymer on hydrolysis is
(A)R4Si
(B)RSiCl3✓ Correct
(C)R2SiCl2
(D)R3SiCl
Answer: (B)
Solution
A cross-linked silicone network needs a silane that can form Si-O-Si links in more than two directions, which requires three hydrolysable chlorines on silicon. RSiCl3 hydrolyses to a silicon bearing three Si-OH groups, and these condense outward into a three-dimensional network; the tetra-substituted silane has no hydrolysable bond, the dichloride gives only linear chains, and the monochloride only chain ends. So the cross-linked polymer comes from RSiCl3.
