The correct statements among I to III regarding group 13 element oxides are,
I. Boron trioxide is acidic
II. Oxides of aluminium and gallium are amphoteric
III. Oxides of indium and thallium are basic
I. Boron trioxide is acidic
II. Oxides of aluminium and gallium are amphoteric
III. Oxides of indium and thallium are basic
- (A)I, II and III✓ Correct
- (B)II and III only
- (C)I and III only
- (D)I and II only
Answer: (A)
Solution
Down the group the oxides of group 13 shift steadily from acidic through amphoteric to basic as metallic character grows. Boron, the least metallic, gives an acidic oxide, so is acidic and statement I holds. Aluminium and gallium are more metallic, and and dissolve in both acids and bases, so they are amphoteric and statement II holds. Indium and thallium, the most metallic of the group, give basic oxides, so statement III holds too. All three statements are correct.
