Which one of the following alkenes when treated with HCl yields majorly an anti Markovnikov product?
(A)H2N−CH=CH2
(B)F3C−CH=CH2✓ Correct
(C)CH3O−CH=CH2
(D)Cl−CH=CH2
Answer: (B)
Solution
An anti-Markovnikov product appears when the normally preferred carbocation cannot form. In FX3C−CH=CHX2 the trifluoromethyl group is strongly electron-withdrawing, so a positive charge on the carbon next to it would be badly destabilised. The proton therefore adds to avoid that, placing the positive charge on the terminal carbon and sending chloride to the carbon bearing the CFX3 group, which is the anti-Markovnikov outcome. So FX3C−CH=CHX2 is the alkene that gives mainly the anti-Markovnikov product with HCl.
