(A)(see structure)✓ Correct
(B)(see structure)
(C)(see structure)
(D)(see structure)
Answer: (A)
Solution
With anhydrous AlClX3 the acid chloride acts as an acylating agent in a Friedel-Crafts acylation of anisole. The methoxy group is a strong activating, ortho/para-directing substituent, and because the para position is open and sterically favoured the acyl group attaches there. The product is the para-acylated ketone, 1-(4-methoxyphenyl)-2-(4-nitrophenyl)ethanone.
