Which of these will produce the highest yield in Friedel Crafts reaction?
(A)(see structure)
(B)(see structure)✓ Correct
(C)(see structure)
(D)(see structure)
Answer: (B)
Solution
A Friedel-Crafts reaction needs a ring that is both activated and free to react. The amide ties up and deactivates, and although aniline's amino group is activating it coordinates to the Lewis-acid catalyst and ends up as a deactivating anilinium ion, while chlorobenzene is only weakly activated. Phenol, with its strongly activating hydroxyl group and no poisoning of the catalyst, is the most reactive and gives the highest yield.
