The number of bonds between sulphur and oxygen atoms in S2O8− and the number of bonds between sulphur and sulphur atoms in rhombic sulphur, respectively, are:
(A)4 and 8
(B)4 and 6
(C)8 and 6
(D)8 and 8✓ Correct
Answer: (D)
Solution
In the peroxydisulfate ion S2O82− each sulfur is bonded to four oxygens, counting the oxygens of the O−O peroxide bridge, so the ion holds eight S−O bonds in all. In rhombic sulfur, S8, the eight atoms close into a puckered crown ring joined by eight S−S single bonds. The two counts are therefore eight and eight.
