Given below are two statements : one is labelled as Assertion A and the other is labelled as Reason R.
Assertion A : In , isomorphous to , the metal is present in +1 oxidation state.
Reason R : Tl metal has fourteen f electrons in the electronic configuration.
In the light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below :
  1. (A)A is correct but R is not correct
  2. (B)Both A and R are correct but R is NOT the correct explanation of A✓ Correct
  3. (C)A is not correct but R is correct
  4. (D)Both A and R are correct and R is the correct explanation of A

Answer: (B)

Solution

In the iodine is present as the linear triiodide ion , exactly as it is in , so the metal has to balance a single negative charge and thallium is in the oxidation state. Thallium has the configuration and therefore does carry fourteen electrons, so Reason R is a correct statement as well. The preference for arises from the inert pair effect, the reluctance of the pair to take part in bonding, and the number of electrons by itself fixes no oxidation state. Both A and R are correct but R is not the correct explanation of A.
