The correct sequential addition of reagents in the preparation of 3-nitrobenzoic acid from benzene is:
  1. (A) ether
  2. (B)
  3. (C) ether, ✓ Correct
  4. (D)

Answer: (C)

Solution

To prepare 3-nitrobenzoic acid from benzene:
  1. First nitrate benzene: → nitrobenzene
  2. Brominate at meta position: → 3-bromonitrobenzene (NO₂ is meta-directing)
  3. Form Grignard reagent: → 3-nitrophenylmagnesium bromide
  4. Carboxylate: → carboxylate salt
  5. Acidify: → 3-nitrobenzoic acid

The nitro group must be introduced first as it directs subsequent bromination to the meta position.
