The equations of the sides AB,BC and CA of a triangle ABC are 2x+y=0,x+py=39 and x−y=3 respectively and P(2,3) is its circumcentre. Then which of the following is NOT true :
(A)(AC)2=9p
(B)(AC)2+p2=136
(C)32< area (△ABC)<36
(D)34< area (△ABC)<38✓ Correct
Answer: (D)
Solution
Vertex A is the meeting of 2x+y=0 and x−y=3, giving A(1,−2), for which the circumcentre satisfies PA2=26. The remaining vertices lie one on 2x+y=0 and one on x−y=3 and must also be at distance 26 from P(2,3); solving PB2=26 along 2x+y=0 gives B(−513,526), and PC2=26 along x−y=3 gives C(7,4). Substituting C into x+py=39 fixes p=8. Then AC2=(7−1)2+(4+2)2=72=9p, and AC2+p2=72+64=136, so both of those statements hold. The area is 211(526−4)−513(4+2)+7(−2−526)=5162=32.4, which satisfies 32<area<36 but not 34<area<38, so it is the latter inequality that fails to be true.
