The number of P−O−P bonds in H4P2O7, (HPO3)3 and P4O10 are respectively.
(A)1,3,6✓ Correct
(B)0,3,6
(C)0,3,4
(D)1, 2, 4
Answer: (A)
Solution
In pyrophosphoric acid, H4P2O7, two PO4 tetrahedra share a single corner oxygen, so the structure carries one P−O−P bridge. Cyclic metaphosphoric acid, (HPO3)3, is a six-membered ring of three phosphorus atoms joined through three bridging oxygens, giving three P−O−P linkages. In P4O10 the four phosphorus atoms occupy the corners of a tetrahedron and are connected by six bridging oxygens along the six edges, giving six P−O−P bridges. The numbers of P−O−P bonds in the three species are therefore 1, 3 and 6 respectively.
