Which of the following amine (s) show (s) positive carbylamines test?
A. (see structure)
B. (CH3)2NH
C. CH3NH2
D. (CH3)3N
E. (see structure)
Choose the correct answer from the options given below :AE
(A)A and E Only
(B)C Only
(C)A and C Only✓ Correct
(D)B, C and D Only
Answer: (C)
Solution
The carbylamine test is positive only for primary amines, which react with chloroform and alcoholic KOH to give foul-smelling isocyanides. Aniline and methylamine are primary and give the test, whereas dimethylamine and N-methylaniline are secondary and trimethylamine is tertiary, so none of these responds. The amines that give a positive carbylamine test are aniline and methylamine.
