The descending order of basicity of following amines is :
(A) (see structure)
(B) (see structure)
(C) (see structure)
(D) CH3NH2
(E) (CH3)2NH
Choose the correct answer from the options given below :ABC
(A)B > E > D > A > C
(B)E > D > B > A > C✓ Correct
(C)E > D > A > B > C
(D)E > A > D > C > B
Answer: (B)
Solution
Basicity turns on how freely the nitrogen lone pair is available. The two aliphatic amines are the most basic because their alkyl groups push electron density onto nitrogen, and dimethylamine, with two such groups, is stronger than methylamine. In the aromatic amines the lone pair is drawn into the ring, so they are weaker; but a para methoxy group feeds density back and makes that aniline more basic than aniline itself, while a para nitro group pulls density away and leaves that aniline the least basic of all. The descending order of basicity is dimethylamine, then methylamine, then p-methoxyaniline, then aniline, then p-nitroaniline.
