A ball suspended by a thread swings in a vertical plane so that its magnitude of acceleration in the extreme position and lowest position are equal. The angle (θ) of thread deflection in the extreme position will be :
(A)tan−1(2)
(B)2tan−1(21)✓ Correct
(C)tan−1(21)
(D)2tan−1(51)
Answer: (B)
Solution
By energy conservation between the lowest point and the extreme point, where the bob rises a height ℓ(1−cosθ),
21v2=gℓ(1−cosθ)⟹ℓv2=2g(1−cosθ).
At the lowest point the acceleration is purely centripetal, alow=v2/ℓ; at the extreme point the speed is momentarily zero, so the acceleration is purely tangential, aext=gsinθ. Equating the two magnitudes,
gsinθ=2g(1−cosθ)⟹sinθ=2(1−cosθ).
Writing sinθ=2sin2θcos2θ and 1−cosθ=2sin22θ,
2sin2θcos2θ=4sin22θ⟹tan2θ=21⟹θ=2tan−1(21).
