Given below are two statements : one is labelled as Assertion A and the other is labelled as Reason R :
Assertion A : Aryl halides cannot be prepared by replacement of hydroxyl group of phenol by halogen atom.
Reason R: Phenols react with halogen acids violently. In the light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate from the options given below:
  1. (A)Both A and R are true but R is NOT the correct explanation of A
  2. (B)A is false but R is true
  3. (C)A is true but R is false✓ Correct
  4. (D)Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A

Answer: (C)

Solution

Assertion A is true: the C-O bond in phenol has partial double-bond character from conjugation with the ring, so its hydroxyl group cannot be replaced by a halogen through reaction with a hydrohalic acid.

Reason R (phenols react with halogen acids violently) is false -- in fact phenols essentially do not react with HX under ordinary conditions; there is no such reaction, violent or otherwise.

Key confirmed: C (A is true but R is false).
