In chromyl chloride test for confirmation of Cl⁻ ion, a yellow solution is obtained. Acidification of the solution and addition of amyl alcohol and 10% H₂O₂ turns organic layer blue indicating formation of chromium pentoxide. The oxidation state of chromium in that is
(A)+6✓ Correct
(B)+5
(C)+10
(D)+3
Answer: (A)
Solution
In the chromyl chloride test, Cl− with K2Cr2O7 and conc. H2SO4 forms orange CrO2Cl2 vapour, which dissolves in NaOH to give a yellow chromate (CrO42−) solution.
On acidification, extraction with amyl alcohol, and treatment with 10%H2O2, chromium pentoxide CrO5 forms in the organic layer as a blue compound. In CrO5, chromium has two peroxo (O22−) linkages and one oxo linkage, giving it an oxidation state of +6.
Key confirmed: A (+6).
