Identify the essential amino acids from below :
(A) Valine
(B) Proline
(C) Lysine
(D) Threonine
(E) Tyrosine

Choose the correct answer from the options given below:
  1. (A)(A),(C) and (D) only✓ Correct
  2. (B)(A),(C) and (E) only
  3. (C)(B),(C) and (E) only
  4. (D)(C), (D) and (E) only

Answer: (A)

Solution

An essential amino acid cannot be synthesized by the human body and must come from the diet. Valine is a branched-chain essential amino acid; lysine is an essential basic amino acid; threonine is an essential hydroxyl-bearing amino acid. Proline and tyrosine, by contrast, can both be synthesized within the body (proline from glutamate, tyrosine from phenylalanine), so they are non-essential. The essential amino acids in the list are valine, lysine and threonine.
