Which among the following react with Hinsberg's reagent?
(A)
(B)
(C) CH3−NH2
(D) N(CH3)3
(E)
Choose the correct answer from the options given below:ABE
(A)B and D only
(B)C and D only
(C)A, B and E only
(D)A, C and E only✓ Correct
Answer: (D)
Solution
Hinsberg's reagent, benzenesulfonyl chloride, reacts with amines that carry a hydrogen on nitrogen: a primary amine gives an N-substituted sulfonamide that is acidic and dissolves in alkali, a secondary amine gives an N,N-disubstituted sulfonamide insoluble in alkali, and a tertiary amine has no N–H to react and remains unchanged.
Aniline (A) and CH3NH2 (C) are primary amines and react; diphenylamine (E), a secondary amine with an N–H, also reacts. N,N-dimethylaniline (B) and trimethylamine, N(CH3)3 (D), are tertiary amines with no replaceable hydrogen on nitrogen and do not react.
A, C and E react with Hinsberg's reagent.
