The correct order of set of reagents for the above conversion is :
(A)Br2∣FeBr3,H2O(Δ),NaOH
(B)H2SO4,Ac2O,Br2,H2O(Δ),NaOH✓ Correct
(C)Ac2O,Br2,H2O(Δ),NaOH
(D)Ac2O,H2SO4,Br2,NaOH
Answer: (B)
Solution
Direct bromination of aniline with Br2/FeBr3 cannot be controlled, since the strongly activating −NH2 group makes the ring so reactive that polybromination results. To obtain a single, ortho-brominated product selectively, the para position must first be blocked and the amino group's activating strength moderated.
Aniline is treated with concentrated H2SO4, which forms the anilinium salt and, on heating, undergoes sulfonation to install a −SO3H group at the para position (sulfanilic acid), blocking that site. The amino group is then acetylated with Ac2O to −NHCOCH3, moderating its activating power so that bromination with Br2 proceeds cleanly ortho to the amide (the para position being occupied by −SO3H). Heating with H2O then removes the sulfonic acid group by reverse sulfonation, and NaOH hydrolyzes the acetamide back to the free amine.
The reagent sequence H2SO4,Ac2O,Br2,H2O(Δ),NaOH delivers the ortho-bromoaniline as the major product.
