The maximum number of RBr producing 2-methylbutane by above sequence of reactions is ______. (Consider the structural isomers only)
Answer: 4
Solution
A Grignard reagent formed from RBr and Mg in dry ether, then quenched with water, simply replaces the C–Br bond with a C–H bond — the carbon skeleton of R carries through unchanged into the alkane R−H.
So the question reduces to: how many structural isomers of C5H11Br share the carbon skeleton of 2-methylbutane, (CH3)2CHCH2CH3?
Placing Br on each distinct carbon of that skeleton gives: 1-bromo-2-methylbutane, BrCH2CH(CH3)CH2CH3 2-bromo-2-methylbutane, CH3C(Br)(CH3)CH2CH3 2-bromo-3-methylbutane, (CH3)2CHCH(Br)CH3 1-bromo-3-methylbutane, (CH3)2CHCH2CH2Br
Each of these four bromides carries the 2-methylbutane skeleton, so Grignard formation followed by hydrolysis regenerates 2-methylbutane in every case.
Four structural isomers of RBr give 2-methylbutane by this route.
