The number of halobenzenes from the following that can be prepared by Sandmeyer's reaction is ____
Structure I
I
Structure II
II
Structure III
III
Structure IV
IV
Structure V
V

Answer: 2

Solution

Sandmeyer's reaction converts an aryl diazonium salt to aryl halides using or , giving chlorobenzene and bromobenzene. It does not give fluorobenzene (made by Balz-Schiemann), iodobenzene (direct KI) or astatobenzene. Hence only 2 halobenzenes (Cl and Br) can be prepared.
