The carbon-based reduction method is NOT used for the extraction of
  1. (A)tin from
  2. (B)iron from
  3. (C)aluminium from ✓ Correct
  4. (D)magnesium from ✓ Correct

Answer: (C), (D)

Solution

Carbon-based reduction (using coke/carbon) is used for metals that are less reactive than carbon. Aluminium and magnesium are highly reactive metals (above carbon in the reactivity series) and cannot be reduced by carbon. They are extracted by electrolytic reduction of their molten compounds. Tin and iron, being less reactive, can be extracted by carbon reduction of their oxides.
