In a radioactive decay chain, nucleus decays to nucleus. Let and be the number of and particles, respectively, emitted in this decay process. Which of the following statements is (are) true?
  1. (A)✓ Correct
  2. (B)
  3. (C)✓ Correct
  4. (D)

Answer: (A), (C)

Solution

In the decay , the mass number decreases by . Each particle has mass number 4, so (A is correct, B is incorrect). Each decay reduces the atomic number by 2, so 5 decays reduce it by 10, from 90 to 80. To reach atomic number 82, we need 2 decays (each increases atomic number by 1), so (C is correct, D is incorrect).
