Given below are two statements:
Statement I: C₂H₅OH and AgCN both can generate nucleophile.
Statement II: KCN and AgCN both will generate nitrile nucleophile with all reaction conditions.
Choose the most appropriate option:
  1. (A)Both statement I and statement II are false.
  2. (B)Statement I is false but statement II is true.
  3. (C)Both statement I and statement II are true.
  4. (D)Statement I is true but statement II is false.✓ Correct

Answer: (D)

Solution

Ethanol ionises to a small extent and supplies the ethoxide ion, while silver cyanide supplies cyanide, so each reagent is a source of a nucleophile. The two cyanides do not behave alike, however. Potassium cyanide is ionic, the free cyanide ion attacks through its carbon end and the product is the nitrile; silver cyanide is largely covalent, only the lone pair on nitrogen is available for attack and the product is the isocyanide. The nitrile nucleophile is therefore not obtained from both salts under all conditions. Statement I is true and Statement II is false.
