Excess of KI reacts with solution and then solution is added to it. Which of the statements is incorrect for this reaction?
  1. (A) is reduced
  2. (B)Evolved is reduced
  3. (C) is oxidized
  4. (D) is formed✓ Correct

Answer: (D)

Solution

Excess potassium iodide reduces copper(II) to copper(I): , so becomes the cuprous iodide while iodide is oxidised to iodine. Added sodium thiosulphate then reduces that liberated back to iodide and is itself oxidised to tetrathionate. The statement that fails is the one saying forms; copper(II) iodide is unstable, and it is the copper(I) salt that actually appears.
