Two fixed frictionless inclined plane making an angle 30∘ and 60∘ with the vertical are shown in the figure. Two block A and B are placed on the two planes. What is the relative vertical acceleration of A with respect to B?
(A)4.9ms−2 in horizontal direction
(B)9.8ms−2 in vertical direction
(C)zero
(D)4.9ms−2 in vertical direction✓ Correct
Answer: (D)
Solution
A block sliding on a smooth plane inclined at angle ϕ to the vertical accelerates down the slope at gcosϕ, since the slope makes 90∘−ϕ with the horizontal. The vertical part of that acceleration is gcosϕ multiplied by cosϕ again, namely gcos2ϕ. For the block on the plane at 30∘ to the vertical this is gcos230∘=43g, and for the one at 60∘ it is gcos260∘=41g. Their vertical accelerations differ by g(43−41)=2g=4.9 m/s2, and since both parts are vertical, the relative acceleration of one block with respect to the other is 4.9 m/s2 directed vertically.
