A particle of mass m falls from rest through a resistive medium having resistive force, F=−kv, where v is the velocity of the particle and k is a constant. Which of the following graphs represents velocity (v) versus time(t)?
(A)(see structure)
(B)(see structure)✓ Correct
(C)(see structure)
(D)(see structure)
Answer: (B)
Solution
The equation of motion of the particle falling from rest is
mdtdv=mg−kv.
Separating variables and integrating from rest,
∫0vmg−kvdv=∫0tmdt,
giving
v=kmg(1−e−kt/m).
At t=0 the speed is zero, and as t→∞ it approaches the terminal value vt=mg/k. The velocity therefore starts from the origin, rises with a continuously decreasing slope, and saturates towards the horizontal line v=mg/k, which is the exponential growth curve that begins at the origin and flattens to a constant terminal velocity.
