If of water is introduced into a flask to 300 K , how many moles of water are in the vapour phase when equilibrium is established ?
(Given : Vapour pressure of at 300 K is )
  1. (A)
  2. (B)
  3. (C)
  4. (D)✓ Correct

Answer: (D)

Solution

At equilibrium the vapour is saturated, so its pressure equals the vapour pressure of water at K, Pa, as long as some liquid remains. Treating the vapour as ideal, the moles present are mol. The dm of liquid introduced is about mol, more than enough to supply this vapour, leaving mol in the vapour phase.
