Which method of purification is represented by the following equation
  1. (A)zone refining
  2. (B)cupellation
  3. (C)Poling
  4. (D)Van Arkel✓ Correct

Answer: (D)

Solution

The equation shows the metal first joining with iodine at a moderate K to make a volatile iodide, and then, at a much hotter K, that iodide decomposing back to pure metal with the iodine set free to be used again. This cycle of forming and then thermally decomposing a volatile iodide on a hot filament is the Van Arkel (iodide) method, used to refine metals such as titanium and zirconium.
