Which of the following is used as a stabilizer during the concentration of sulphide ores?
- (A)Pine oils
- (B)Xanthates
- (C)Fatty acids
- (D)Cresols✓ Correct
Answer: (D)
Solution
In the froth-flotation concentration of a sulphide ore several reagents are added to the oil-water pulp. Collectors such as pine oil, fatty acids and xanthates coat the sulphide particles and make them water-repellent so that they cling to the air bubbles and rise with the froth. A separate duty is done by froth stabilisers, which toughen the bubbles and stop the froth from collapsing too soon; cresols and aniline act in this way. The reagent used as a stabiliser during the concentration of sulphide ores is cresols.
