The metal that cannot be obtained by electrolysis of an aqueous solution of its salts is:
  1. (A)Cu
  2. (B)Cr
  3. (C)Ag
  4. (D)Ca✓ Correct

Answer: (D)

Solution

When an aqueous solution is electrolysed, whichever process is easier wins at the cathode. The -block metals such as calcium have very negative reduction potentials, so water is reduced to hydrogen in preference and the metal never plates out. Copper, chromium and silver have far less negative potentials and deposit readily from solution. The metal that cannot be won this way is calcium.
