Which of the following molecules is least resonance stabilized ?
  1. (A)(see structure)
    Structure benzene
    benzene
  2. (B)(see structure)
    Structure furan
    furan
  3. (C)(see structure)
    Structure pyridine
    pyridine
    ✓ Correct
  4. (D)(see structure)
    Structure cyclohexadienone
    cyclohexadienone

Answer: (C)

Solution

Aromatic rings are heavily resonance-stabilised because their electrons delocalise around a closed, planar loop obeying the rule — true of benzene, furan and pyridine alike. The cyclohexadienone, by contrast, has its carbonyl breaking that cyclic conjugation, so it carries the least resonance stabilisation of the set.
