Two masses m1=5kg and m2=10kg, connected by an inextensible string over a frictionless pulley, are moving as shown in the figure. The coefficient of friction of horizontal surface is 0.15 . The minimum weight m that should be put on top of m2 to stop the motion is :
(A)10.3 kg
(B)18.3 kg
(C)27.3 kg✓ Correct
(D)43.3 kg
Answer: (C)
Solution
On the verge of motion the hanging mass fixes the string tension at T=m1g=5g, and this must be held by friction under the block on the table. The largest friction available is μ(m2+m)g, so stopping the motion requires μ(m2+m)g≥m1g, that is 0.15(10+m)≥5. This gives 10+m≥0.155=33.3, so m≥23.3 kg, and the smallest offered weight that actually meets this requirement is 27.3 kg.
