A block of mass 10 kg is kept on a rough inclined plane as shown in the figure. A force of 3 N is applied on the block. The coefficient of static friction between the plane and the block is 0.6 . What should be the minimum value of force P , such that the block does not move downward? (take g=10ms−2)
(A)32 N✓ Correct
(B)18 N
(C)23 N
(D)25 N
Answer: (A)
Solution
From the figure the plane is inclined at 45∘, the 3 N force acts down the plane and P acts up the plane. For the minimum P the block is on the verge of sliding down, so limiting friction f=μmgcosθ also acts up the plane. Balancing forces along the incline, the two up-slope forces hold the two down-slope forces: P+μmgcosθ=mgsinθ+3. With m=10 kg, g=10ms−2, μ=0.6 and θ=45∘: P=mgsin45∘+3−μmgcos45∘=70.7+3−42.4≈32 N.
