The correct statement regarding the given Ellingham diagram is
(A)At 1400∘C, Al can be used for the extraction of Zn from ZnO✓ Correct
(B)At 500∘C, coke can be used for the extraction of Zn from ZnO
(C)Coke cannot be used for the extraction of Cu from Cu2O
(D)At 800∘CCu can be used for the extraction of Zn from ZnO
Answer: (A)
Solution
On an Ellingham diagram a metal can reduce another oxide when its own line lies below that oxide's line at the chosen temperature. At 1400∘C the Al/AlX2OX3 line has dropped below the Zn/ZnO line, so 4Al+6ZnO2AlX2OX3+6Zn has a negative ΔG and aluminium can indeed extract zinc from ZnO. The other statements fail the same test: at 500∘C the carbon line still lies above Zn/ZnO, carbon does reduce CuX2O, and the less reactive copper cannot reduce ZnO.
