In the cube of side 'a' shown in the figure, the vector from the central point of the face ABOD to the central point of the face BEFO will be:
(A)21a(k^−i^)
(B)21a(i^−k^)✓ Correct
(C)21a(j^−i^)
(D)21a(j^−k^)
Answer: (B)
Solution
Reading the coordinates off the cube with the origin at A, the centre of face ABOD sits at (0,2a,2a) and the centre of face BEFO at (2a,2a,0). The displacement from the first to the second is the difference of these position vectors, (2a,2a,0)−(0,2a,2a)=(2a,0,−2a). The j^ parts cancel because both centres share the same height along that axis, leaving 2a(i^−k^). The whole trick is to anchor one corner as origin and take each face centre as the average of its four corners.
