A solid sphere and solid cylinder of identical radii approach an incline with the same linear velocity (see figure). Both roll without slipping all throughout. The two climb maximum heights and on the incline. The radio is given by:
- (A)1
- (B)
- (C)
- (D)✓ Correct
Answer: (D)
Solution
When a body rolls up an incline without slipping, all of its kinetic energy, both the translational part and the rotational part, is converted into gravitational potential energy at the highest point it reaches. So for either body , and because the contact is rolling, . For the solid sphere , which makes the left side , so . For the solid cylinder , giving , so . Taking the ratio, the common cancels and we are left with . Notice the sphere climbs a little less high because a smaller share of its energy is tied up in rotation.
